Find your PERFECT Mastermind Partner

June 3, 2019

No business can grow alone. Growth of any kind requires support.

Finding a mastermind partner - jumping on the sand

It was this realisation that literally transformed my business.

I struggled for so many years on my own before finally investing in support.

However, support can take many forms and as much as hiring my own business coach was instrumental in propelling my business forward, so was having a Mastermind Partner.

So this week I thought I’d talk more about what this is and how to do it properly.

What is a Mastermind Partner?

A Mastermind Partner is someone you connect with professionally (and personally) and who is at a similar stage of business as you.

Together, you make a commitment to support each other’s business development by meeting on a regular basis, to hold each other accountable.

The partnership allows a space for mutual support and celebration, where one might also offer feedback and professional expertise.

However, a successful partnership requires rules and boundaries!

It is also entirely dependant on finding a person that is right for YOU!

I have had many Mastermind Partners over the years before finding a perfect match, so I thought it might be useful for me to share a few tips!

HOW TO FIND YOUR PERFECT MASTERMIND PARTNER

1. Interview them!

I’d love you to approach finding a Mastermind Partner as if you were interviewing for a new paid position in your business. Don’t be tempted to choose your best friend (unless you feel it really would work!) or the first person that offers.

Be selective! Suggest a trial period and review it.

2. Experience

Always chose someone who is at a similar stage of business as you or who has a similar level of business experience.

3. Expertise

I find that we tend to be drawn towards others who are doing the same thing as us.

However, finding a partner that has a different professional expertise can be so useful.

My Mastermind Partner is also a coach but her specialism is very different to mine. This means that we are both able to share advice from our own professional fields, which can be invaluable.

4. Connection

Sharing common values and beliefs is essential to any good working relationship. You need to actually get on if this partnership is to last!

5. Boundaries

Friendship is important in this relationship but boundaries are essential! Without them your time might easily slip into chatting or gossiping!

Creating and maintaining effective and strict boundaries are absolutely essential. Make sure your Mastermind partner shares your views on what healthy boundaries are.

6. Common Agenda

The relationship needs to be mutually beneficial. You need to have a common goal.

7. Think Practical

Your meetings don’t need to take place in person but keep in mind that you will need to find a time that is mutually convenient each week (or how ever often you both choose.)

Consistency is important, so think about time zones as well as family and work commitments.

How to set up your Mastermind Partnership for success

The more clarity you have about your expectations, the more effective it will be.

Discuss and write down a clear set of rules and boundaries from the beginning.

For example, how long and how often will you meet? What you are comfortable discussing? What about privacy? How will you deal with having to reschedule calls? Will you have a trial period and then review?

I have been with my current Mastermind Partner for over 3 years. We meet every week for an hour. This time is split equally between us…in other words we each have 30 minutes to talk. We are great friends but the time we spend with each other is fiercely protected just for business.

Every Mastermind Partnership is different.

The amazing thing is that you get to set it in a way that best supports you…and once you find your perfect match, you’ll wonder how you ever did it without them!

Wishing you a fabulously masterful, connecting kind of week!
